Fantasy - What Ever Happened to Your Dreams ?
Opening Saturday Novembre 24th at Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire

Opening Saturday Novembre 24th, 2007 from 3pm to 9 pm

The English term "Fantasy", which means both fantasy and the fantastic, serves as a guide to the exhibition What Ever Happened to Your Dreams ?
From November 24 to January 19, at the Galerie les Filles du Calvaire, Paris.

Erotical object and advetising privileged target, the child is often represented in contemporary art including photography and video. Adults (author or spectators of the image) have a tender and terrible glance to his World: sometimes seen as a double or a radical self, a mysterious being sometime hostile and cruel, nevertheless fragile and vulnerable, the child lives in a perfect or fantasy world where adults are projecting their fantasies.

The childlike universe, lures associated with an idyllic, fantastic or nightmarish virtuality, ideally takes shape in a fairy tale aesthetic. It is often referred to as a kind of lost Eden where fears and dangers, monsters and evil are hiding behind a prettiness display. It is that phantasmagoria that can be found in popular images.
In the latter, contemporary artists are allusively contributing while building on psychoanalysis and the contribution both cultural and technical of the photographic and film medium. If the works refer frequently and ambivalentely to the joys and anxieties related to the impulses of childhood - a time when dream / nightmare and reality are blending - affirmed staging, apparent or exaggerated digital manipulation are emerging as forms of symbolic resistance to the projections of desires and fears from adults and the roles they wish these childish figures will play.

The title of the exhibition at Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire: "What ever happened to your dreams?" is a direct reference to the 1960's Henry Farrell book adapted for the movies by Robert Aldrich in 1962, "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" It introduces the concepts of fantasy and duality between romance and terror, between purity and evil, embodied in the film by an aging Bette Davis locked in her child's wishes and lust for eternal youth, struggling with the perversity of Joan Crawford. This exhibition will put the emphasis on pieces illustrating the loss and the overwhelming desire for adults to preserve their dreams.

Georg Baselitz "REMIX"
Opening Saturday, November 17 at the Gallerie Catherine Putman

Opening / Vernissage Saturday, November 17, 2007

The gallery Catherine Putnam, Baselitz french editor since 1997, shows the latest prints of the artist as well as some recent gouaches and ink in the series of "Remix". Since 2005, Baselitz Actually resumes, in his painting and in his printmaking, compositions from the 60's and 70's. He redraws them, sometimes even questionning the inversion of figures (started in 1969), illustrating a genuine dialogue with his early work.

He strikes at the copper plate, wood or linoleum (more appropriate surface for monumental prints) with as much violence and control as found in his painting and his sculpture. Indeed, the style of Georg Baselitz was confirmed over the years in finding an accuracy and a fantastic energy in its strokes. George Baselitz masters the colors he manipulates with lightness and harmony, all in a sense of freshness.

A major feature of this "engraver-painter" is to represent his subjects head upside down. Indeed, for him this technique gave him the freedom to confront pictorial problems.

Tokyo Hotel: A room with a view
Hôtel EVERLAND on the roof of the Palais de Tokyo
OPENING Thursday, november 15

Discover Everland Hotel, an art work AND a hotel room made by swiss duet Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann (L/B). OPENING Thursday, november 15th from 2pm to 8pm

Hotel Everland is a project by Swiss artist-duo L/B (Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann). L/B are known for their Installations that deal with architecture and space and invite the viewer to get involved and become part of the artwork.

Everland is a Hotel with only one room including a bathroom, a king-size bed and a lounge. The bounteous dimensioned room represents the subjective dream of a hotel: the architecture, the playful details, as well as the request to steal the golden embroidered bath towels. All Everland guests are partaking in the project.

Also the concept for operating the hotel was defined by the artists. All facets are important constituents of the artistic idea: The room can be booked for one night only, the mini-bar is fully stocked and included in the price, breakfast is delivered to the door and a record collection stands at ones disposal.

Palais de Tokyo, Paris | 1. Nov. 2007 - Dec. 2008

As of November 1st and for a year, the Parisians are invited to a unique experience: a room with a view (the best available in the world) on the roof of the Palais de Tokyo facing the Eiffel tower.

Hotel Everland
The hotel is a project Everland torque of Swiss artists L / B (Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann). They are known by their facilities that address the areas of architecture and space very often inviting the audience to participate.

The hotel consists of a single chamber, equipped with a bathroom, a double bed and a lounge. This room, generously, embodies the same fantasy of the hotel, the architectural design up to the staging of every detail, from towels embroidered with golden thread inciting to cleptomanie. All hosts of Everland become part of the artwork.

Hotel Everland Paris - booking
Currently all available nights are booked.
Bookings can be made within the next 60 days.

The next night Tuesday, 8 January 2008 will be available for booking on 9 November 2007 at a random hour on this page.

Room price per night:
Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday: 333 Euro
Thursday, Friday, Saturday: 444 Euro
Monday closed

The night of 31.12.2007 (New Year's Eve) is auctioned.
The auction starts on the 15.11.07 on this page and will run for seven days.

Hotel Everland was first developed on invitation of the Curator Gianni Jetzer for the Exhibition concept "Everland" at the Swiss national exhibition in the year 2002. The Hotel was planned by L/B and built by a team of craftspeople in Burgdorf. Following it was transported to Yverdon where it was located on the lake of Neuchatel for 4 moth. After the end of Expo.02 the mobile pavilion was brought to Burgdorf and was placed on the factory roof at L/B's studio.

From June 2006 until September 2007 the one room hotel was exhibited and run as a Hotel on the roof-deck of the Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig, Germany. Like in Yverdon, visitors could take a peek at the Hotel during the opening hours of the museum, after closing hours at 18.00 it was reserved for the guests.

As a last destination Hotel Everland moves to Paris from October 2007 until end of 2008. High above the city, with a view on the Eiffel Tower, it is installed on the roof of Palais de Tokyo. It will also be possible to book the room for the night or visit it during the day.

In the end of 2007 a book about the Project will be published by Christoph Merian Verlag.

Russian Mafia Tattoo
Sergueï Vassiliev Photographs
Opening Vernissage Monday, November 5th from 5.00pm

Sergueï Vassiliev photographs reveals the russian criminals world throughout tatoos made in prisons.

Russian criminal tattoos have a complex system of symbols which can be 'read' to give quite detailed information about the wearer. Not only do the symbols carry meaning but the area of the body on which they are placed may be meaningful too. The initiation tattoo of a new gang member is usually placed on the chest and may incorporate a rose. A rose on the chest is also used within the Russian Mafia. Wearing false or unearned tattoos is punishable by death in the criminal underworld.

Tattoos done in a Russian prison have a distinct blueish color and usually appear somewhat blurred because of the lack of instruments to draw fine lines. The ink is often created from burning the heel of a shoe and mixing the soot with urine.

Tattoos on the forehead are usually forcibly applied, and designed both to humiliate the bearer and warn others about him or her. They frequently consist of slurs about the bearer's ethnicity, sexual orientation, or perceived collusion with the prison authorities. They can indicate that the bearer is a member of a political group considered offensive by other prisoners (e.g. Vlasovite), or has been convicted of a crime (such as child rape) which is disapproved of by other criminals.

Tattoos that consist of political or anti-authoritarian statements are known as 'grins'. They are often tattooed on the stomach of a vor v zakone, as a means of acquiring status in the criminal community. A Russian criminologist, Yuri Dubyagin, has claimed that, during the Soviet era, there existed 'secret orders' that an anti-government tattoo must be 'destroyed surgically', and that this procedure was usually fatal. Consequently, such tattoos were also sometimes applied forcibly to the back of a violator of the 'thieves' code', as punishment.

Photos presented were shot by Sergueï Vassiliev, one of the most famous russian photographer , between 1989 and 1992 in camps and prisons from 5 russian regions for the making of the Danzig Baldaev book who dedicated his all life to criminals tatoos with a unique collection of more than 3600 tatoo drawings. Baldaev realized a ture ethnolog masterwork while employee in the russian penitentiary system.

The exhibition "Lumen 18", presented at the CANOPY SPACE, offers 3 visions about the relationship an individual/Photographers keeps up with his/her environment.

With his "Already-made" series, David Cousin-Marsy reveals, through his gaze, unexpected art objects in an over-urban, bland and lonely world and pimp up our ordinary view. This very same urban environment is the setting to a walking dream by Benjamin Josset, who makes associations in his series "Rencontre" (Encounters). Emilie Juillet as for her, set up an inventory of emotion trigged by her environment. She collect faces, details, moments which become as many "Human Nature(s)". For more than 20 years, the Gao Brothers - Gao Zhen & Gao Qiang ) team up to form a brilliant artistic couple which work is attempting to describe all over mutating China's paradoxes. Born in Jinan, in the province of Shandong, located in the north of China, both of them studied Art and together, they produce for the international an ensemble of virtuoso multimedia including video, photography, theatre, performance, painting and sculpture not to mention numerous critical essays and their mentoring of other artist's exhibitions.
True leaders, and despite repeated censorship from their fellow authorities, their are the over conscious observers of all transformations and turmoil happening in their country.

The Gao brothers stay away from any judgement or form of cynism. They watch mankind like scientist stare at viruses through a microscope. They reproduce human behaviours with a touch of choregraphy.

Valerio Adami "Jusqu’ici"
Vernissage on Saturday October 27th, 2007 from Noon till 08:00pm

Exhibition: Saturday October 27th to December 29th, 2007

Valerio Adami, the "Frenchier" Italian painter is coming back at the Daniel Templon gallerie with a new serie of painting made between 2006 and 2007. Entitled "Jusqu'ici" (up to here), the exhibition offer a filling past of themes dear to Valerio Adami's heart for the last 50 years: litterature, travel, relationship between poetry, music and painting.

After being absent for nearly 10 years, Valerio Adami did a spectacular come back with his 2004 first exhibition @ the Templon gallerie. we rediscovered his famous solid colors and his thick dark outlines reminding us the clear line of comic strips.

In this new exhibition, drawing still plays a fundamental role. For Adami, the outline, and notably the closed shapes, are tighly connected to language and words. Numerous literary references are appearing between the lines: Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Claudel… Like poems of an intimate atmosphere, the paintings develop memories of childhoods, theatre stages, vision of orient and hotel's rooms. Despite the richness of colours, the tone of the exhibition is somehow more introspective and gloom seems to haunt the painting's characters.
