Other DiVA related events and program will take place at the exhibition space of Le Louvre des antiquaires on the second floor/

DiVA is the first art fair dedicated to video and digital art. Galleries will exhibit works using the moving image, new media and digital photography.
Since the invention of photography, nothing has had a greater impact on artistic practice without the the emergence of the personal video camera, and later, digital technology. Today, cameras and video cameras, digital and otherwise, with the aid of computers, have become the ultimate tool in creating a dynamic arena for artistic expression without the limits imposed by the artist's physical surroundings.

The concentration of serious collectors in Paris, both contemporary art lovers and those who collect as part of family tradition, makes Paris one of the most important places for exhibiting video art and new media. DiVA Paris promises to be a valuable addition to the city art Arena with local collectors welcoming video pairs a serious part of their collection.

Russian Mafia Tattoo
Sergueï Vassiliev Photographs
Opening Vernissage Monday, November 5th from 5.00pm

Sergueï Vassiliev photographs reveals the russian criminals world throughout tatoos made in prisons.

Russian criminal tattoos have a complex system of symbols which can be 'read' to give quite detailed information about the wearer. Not only do the symbols carry meaning but the area of the body on which they are placed may be meaningful too. The initiation tattoo of a new gang member is usually placed on the chest and may incorporate a rose. A rose on the chest is also used within the Russian Mafia. Wearing false or unearned tattoos is punishable by death in the criminal underworld.

Tattoos done in a Russian prison have a distinct blueish color and usually appear somewhat blurred because of the lack of instruments to draw fine lines. The ink is often created from burning the heel of a shoe and mixing the soot with urine.

Tattoos on the forehead are usually forcibly applied, and designed both to humiliate the bearer and warn others about him or her. They frequently consist of slurs about the bearer's ethnicity, sexual orientation, or perceived collusion with the prison authorities. They can indicate that the bearer is a member of a political group considered offensive by other prisoners (e.g. Vlasovite), or has been convicted of a crime (such as child rape) which is disapproved of by other criminals.

Tattoos that consist of political or anti-authoritarian statements are known as 'grins'. They are often tattooed on the stomach of a vor v zakone, as a means of acquiring status in the criminal community. A Russian criminologist, Yuri Dubyagin, has claimed that, during the Soviet era, there existed 'secret orders' that an anti-government tattoo must be 'destroyed surgically', and that this procedure was usually fatal. Consequently, such tattoos were also sometimes applied forcibly to the back of a violator of the 'thieves' code', as punishment.

Photos presented were shot by Sergueï Vassiliev, one of the most famous russian photographer , between 1989 and 1992 in camps and prisons from 5 russian regions for the making of the Danzig Baldaev book who dedicated his all life to criminals tatoos with a unique collection of more than 3600 tatoo drawings. Baldaev realized a ture ethnolog masterwork while employee in the russian penitentiary system.

Lumen18
Opening october 31st, 2007 - 07:00pm
Benjamin Josset, David Cousin-Marsy, Emilie Juillet

The exhibition "Lumen 18", presented at the CANOPY SPACE, offers 3 visions about the relationship an individual/Photographers keeps up with his/her environment.

With his "Already-made" series, David Cousin-Marsy reveals, through his gaze, unexpected art objects in an over-urban, bland and lonely world and pimp up our ordinary view. This very same urban environment is the setting to a walking dream by Benjamin Josset, who makes associations in his series "Rencontre" (Encounters). Emilie Juillet as for her, set up an inventory of emotion trigged by her environment. She collect faces, details, moments which become as many "Human Nature(s)". Those 3 photographers share with us the light they see in our surrounding world.

The Bastille's Big Contemporary Art Market
Opening Tuesday Octobre 30th - November 4th, 2007 from 5:00pm

Opening on Tuesday, October 30th from 5:00pm to 10:00pm

Since 1994 this art show is a delight to art enthusiast with its eclectism and its coloufull stands.
Everything strats with the magic of the place itself... the Bastille harbour, the boats, the pool, the footbridge, the gardens, everything contribute to a very special place indeed. Listen to visitors and exhibitors: "it's "à la Bastille and nowhere else!"
The "First exhibition" zone is getting bigger. Due to last year's success, artists taking advantage of this great opportunity are coming back in numbers and want to meet again the 30.000 visitors they met for the first time last year and become full exhibitors.

This year, the 14th edition's main theme will be "the Pallet", more than 500 artists will exhibit in the middle of a rather surprising setting realized with wooden pallet - wether painters tools (Palette means also this in french) or colored handling pallet. painted or diverted from their main purpose, it'll be pallet day...
